What’s Running Your Business, You Or Anxiety?

Do you ever wake up some mornings feeling super motivated, like you can just go to work and crush your to do list?

What about days when you feel so overwhelmed that you get nothing done and find you’ve spent all day time wasting on social media or doing nothing of value?

You might not know it but both these are states of anxiety, stress or overwhelm and they come from an emotional reactive mindset. The issue is you could be running and managing your business from either of these emotions on any given day and not realise the negative affects its having on you and your business success.

When we manage ourselves and business from an emotional state we could actually be seriously under performing, reducing our chances of success and on the rocky road to mental, emotional and physical burn out.

17800470_600744943457592_6493926092572661185_n

Take for example if you’re business is lacking in converted sales numbers and you don’t hit your target this month…You could get very reactive and start marketing like a mad man without really planning it all out before hand. Trying to sell your services/products without really considering the long term game.

You’ll have become reactive to an emotional state of mind.

You don’t plan your marketing, your sales, your strategy out…You just react to the moment and the thought ‘I need more sales’. And although you may very well need MORE sales, However it’s your needy approach that will kill your businesses ability to really succeed.

The key is to work daily form a place of measurable production.

The phrase “what gets measured gets done”is a phrase to live by for us self employed business owners.

The only way we can build a successful, scalable, productive and profitable business…Long term is to create production boundaries that enable us to measure our working output.

This way there’s no more working from emotions and reaction, there’s NO working for a place of feeling because this has NO PLACE in the managing of you.

Did you know that the writer Stephen King sits down everyday and writes 2000 words REGARDLESS of his mood, energy or feeling?

He doesn’t write 5000 and he doesn’t write 500, he writes 2000 and if this takes him 2 hours or 4 hours that’s what he does. He sets measurable boundaries for himself…And the results speak for themselves.

So what do you measure in your business?

How do you measure your days productivity?

What action steps do you create DAILY that move your business forward?

This is just one of the things I coach my clients to do in their business and it creates relentless clarity and productivity.

I find that most business owners don’t NEED more information, they are already overload with it. What they need are new habits, structure and organisation that improves their working function, performance and mindset.

Then on top that need require accountability to doing what they said they would do to grow their business. Sometimes all you need is someone else in your corner supporting you and being a sounding board for ideas. Sometimes you need a friendly kick up the ass…And sometime you need somewhere in the middle of both.

I’m opening slots up for my Performance Coaching Program.

Go from Good to Great to Unstoppable in your life and business.

Failing in Fitness.

Have you ever heard that failure in fitness, as in life is an essential ingredient to the over all process?

See without it we can never reach beyond our preconceived limits, we can never hit the heights of our abilities.

Within my own fitness journey over the past 2 months I have attempt a new PB in my Back squat, Front squat, Snatch and clean and jerk…And each time I’ve fallen short and not reached a new PB. Missing lift after lift over and over again. I’m getting close but just not reaching it.

However this is the reality of what can occur when ANY OF US try and push past our limits and this made me think of this blog post today.

Fitness is all about fitter, stronger, faster and improvement. Its all about small marginal gains made over a long period of time. AND the same is true for business, climbing the corporate ladder, relationships and personal development, they are all achieved and built through small marginal gains done consistently over time.

The ONLY way we can improve is to push beyond our current preconceived limitations. The thing is, when we push to our limits we are much more likely to miss the mark, make a mistake or screw up…Than we are likely to succeed.

The problem occurs when people are so fearful of making a mistake, or they fear failure, or they lack self belief in their own abilities that they are unconfident about pushing outside of these limits. So they end up living in their comfort zone. They end up procrastinating and being halted by fear.

So they end up playing it safe, staying in the comfort zone, not taking risks because of a lack of self belief. Also is he/she has ventured out before and put it on the line and failed, this has probably been fatal to their self confidence. Now meaning they are less likely to venture out again in the future.

The issue is that may of us have this impression that failure means the end, it spells disaster. But I’m a big believer in that we NEED to make mistakes so we can find our true path.

What I believe with failure is this:

  1. The route I have chosen isn’t right for me, so chose a different way.
  2. I’m not ready to be at that level right now, but in time I will be.
  3. I must work harder and smarter.
  4. I’ve learned something that I can change for next time to get a different outcome.
  5. Failure isn’t the end, its an opportunity to learn, adapt and put things right for next time.

The saying “We win or we learn” is a great saying because its true. If you don’t get the outcome or result you we’re hoping for, you actually learned something that can be implemented next time so you get a different outcome.

Remember that FAILURE is NEVER FINAL. It’s only showing us that the route we have taken may not be right…So go another way.

We learn through our mistakes and as long as we aren’t fearful of doing so we can pick up on valuable lessons that make us better next time. I encourage you to find a successful person in the world who hasn’t failed more often than they have won.

Anyone who wants to achieve more whether that be in the gym, sport, business, career, income or life will have to taste preconceived failure more often than they taste success. This is the price we pay for going to our limits. This is what raises our own bar and takes us to that next level in whatever our venture is.

To move us forward in life we will have to go to our limits and continue to push to break through them. During training, in the lab, in the office, at home or where ever it is you do your work, you will have to drop the ego and embrace the screw ups and mistakes…Because its all part of the learning process.

Then sometime in the not so distant future when it matters, when it happens, when it’s go time, when all eyes are on you…that’s when you’ll hit your next level, your PB. That’s when you’ll achieve your personal greatness, that’s when you’ll past your current sticking point. That’s when all the f**k ups are forgotten for that moment of glory and success.

Failure in fitness is like life, it has to happen for us to push past it toward future greatness….Because failure is never final and its never fatal.

Failure is never final or fatal unless you ALLOW it to be.

I dare you to do that thing that’s making you feel scared and unsure of yourself. I dare you to try that new PB in the gym. I dare you to train for that marathon. I dare you to enter that competition, I dare you to pursue your passions in life, I dare you to enhance your knowledge,  I dare you to step up and try. I dare you to learn from your mistakes and use that to get a better outcome next time…

I dare you to try it over and over again and see what outcome you get.

Because the reality of the situation is this…You deserve to make your life the best it can become and you owe it to yourself to at the very least TRY.

Alpha Dave.

PS: Failure is never Final…We either win or we learn.

Discover Your True Potential.

How often do we look at where we are in relation to our goals and think…

“I’m still miles away”. Or “I just feel like I’m no further forward”. Or “It’s to hard”.

With ANY goal what we should understand is that it’s about doing, achieving, having or reaching something we DON’T already have. And with any goal that’s worth while, it’s probably something that isn’t easily attainable.

If it were easy to achieve we’d have no motivation for it, right?

I’m a huge believer that we can achieve MOST things in life if we set our minds to it. I don’t believe we can have anything we want because there will always be limiting factors such as ability, skill, knowledge, genetics etc that come into play.

HOWEVER for 85-90% of our goals we can achieve them as long as we are willing to put the consistent hard work in and level up as a person. (YES you will need to develop yourself to reach a new goal or level, I’ve wrote many blogs on this)

How to Discover Your True Potential.

The issue that many people have (me included from time to time) is that we want our goals NOW, TODAY and we want everything yesterday. We want to reach our potential NOW.

Let’s take for example opening a new business. We get an idea. We design our product/service. We put our systems in place. We get our branding done and we market it…Then nothing really happens. We might get a few new customers but our business just doesn’t seem to taking off. Then in a few years we’re wondering why we aren’t as big as Apple or Starbucks, or even other business locally to us.

This is that instant gratification BS causing us to feel this way.

We have guru’s telling us we can be whatever we want to be, we can have want ever we want. We look at social media and see all these people building a personal or business brand and it looks so easy. We see these athletes reaching new levels of fitness, strength and speed and it looks simple. We see fitness models showing off their bodies and believe we can achieve the same with just a few simple exercises per day.

We live in a world of NOW, instant results, instant gratification and instant success.

But anyone with half a brain knows that success is anything but instant.

If we desire REAL long term success and reach that LEVEL we desire whether that be in business, career, sport, wealth or areas of life such as fitness and health, they are achieved via ‘marginal gains’ done through consistent effort.

Marginal gains is where the magic happens. Marginal gains is where you discover and harness your POTENTIAL.

Let’s take for example an Athlete, lets says Football since it’s the World Cup.

A footballer needs skill, strength, speed, stamina, mental toughness, nutrition, speedy recovery, a strong team attitude…Just to name a few attributes.

Take each of these areas and let’s say for a player to reach their ‘true potential’ they’ll need to be or as close to 100% in each area. The likely hood of this happening is very slim but humour me for a minute.

Let’s say right now your scores are:

  • Skill 70%
  • Strength 65%
  • Speed 90%
  • Stamina 75%
  • Mental 90%
  • Nutrition 50%
  • Recovery 40%
  • Team attitude 95%

Most people do 1 of 3 options:

  1. They look at their weaker areas and try to increase these as soon as possible. So they will take nutrition and recovery and focus solidly on these to increase their scores. However they end up neglecting other areas. So nutrition might go to 80% but their speed drops to 70% and there stamina to 50%. So they end up losing out in other areas and actually potentially worsen their performance.
  2. Some just focus on their strengths and leave their weaknesses. They think if they just work harder on their strengths then everything will be ok. However the more they focus on their strength areas and ignore their weaknesses…The weaker those areas become. Speed goes up to 95% but recovery drops to 35%. They are actually no further forward.

The secret is option number 3, the marginal gains approach.

3. A smart individual looks at making a steady, consistent and focused 1% increase in each area everyday or every week. So they focus on nutrition and improve by 1%, same with strength, skill etc. They continue every week to progress these by 1% marginal gains.

Overtime they raise their entire game, results, ability and success via an ‘all round’ approach.

This approach takes longer and requires patience, however the results achieved through this approach are much more long term and sustainable.

It’s about making a 1% improvement in EACH and every area and continually doing this month on month, year on year. It’s through these small, consistent incremental steps that done over time get us to our goal.

If we only look for instance success and gratification then we could be heading for disappointment. If we are tying to take bigger leaps than we are capable of then we could end up burning out, screwing up, neglecting other areas and not really understanding what we need to do consistently that can make us a success. We don’t lay the foundations.

Marginal, consistent gains is where the magic happens, its where you harness what you’re potentially capable of as a human.

Remember any successful athlete, entrepreneur or individual when you follow them online or watch their videos you are often just seeing the end result, their highlight reel, their moment in the sun. Unfortunately that leads to this instant gratification need and belief that success is a given right.

However what you didn’t see are the years and years and years it took of marginal gains, sacrifice, effort, constant commitment and mental fortitude it took to get to that level.

Focus on the longer game and make small forward steps consistently and through this you’ll discover what you are truly capable of.

We Learn From Our Mistakes Not Our Wins.

There are some very powerful lessons that we CAN learn as a result of mistakes, setbacks, mishaps or even our failures. These lessons, if learned have the capacity to transform our future success.

Now I don’t really like using that word…Failure because we never truly fail. However I know that that particular word is used to describe a particular event that we have had a lack of success in.

What I learned…

On Saturday I took part in another Crossfit finals competition, This one was called ‘Battle For Middle Ground’. I was entered into the middle ground category which was an intermediate comp.

During this competition us athletes had 4 events to complete and one event to complete 2 weeks prior to the competition starting, so 5 events in total.

The Events:

35386219_799995056865912_3504891277168607232_n

This is how my competition stacked up.

  • Event 0 (the one we did 2 weeks before the event). This was a 10 rep max push press, back squat and deadlift all set in 12min total = 16th.
  • Event 1 = 2nd
  • Event 2 part A = 26th
  • Event 2 part B = 1st
  • Event 3 = 12th
  • Event 4 = 3rd.

Overall my finish was 4th and I narrowly missed the podium by 3 points.

As you can see I had some very good finishes throughout the day however a 16th and a 26th place finish in 2 events stopped me reaching that podium. And this is what myself and you can learn from our mistakes.

See a win doesn’t really tell you that much, ok it tells you what you’re doing is probably working, or maybe you were a little lucky, but a loss can give us so much more information.

For me when it comes to Crossfit I know where my weaknesses lie, I have tangible results and data that conform this its not just based on theory or feelings. To win a Crossfit competition of this standard I would need to finish all my events at a minimum inside the top 10 on everything, maybe even top 5.

I had 3 event finishes outside the top 10 and then 3 top 3 placings. This shows my inconsistency as an athlete and what my strengths and weaknesses are.

I believe that for any of us it’s our loses that can show us what we need to fix.

Take any area of life you may have come up short in, work, career, business, sport, hobbies, financial. You’ll have come up short and missed your mark and this is where we LEARN. Our mistakes highlight the part/s of us we need to improve upon, or the extra knowledge, skills, abilities we need to get or improve upon so we have better success next time.

A setback gives us data, an actual tangible result that when analysed tells us what we need to do next time so we don’t get the SAME result.

I challenge you to look at where your coming up short, what might be holding you back, what areas could you be making mistakes in that are affecting your bigger picture and correct these. Look at the information that’s been given to you, be honest with yourself and then ‘Do The Work’ to correct them.

I could easily look at my high place finishes and think to myself ‘I’m doing ok, I’m winning events and coming top 3’. And YES that is nice to see but in all honesty it means nothing to me if I’m not winning the competition overall.

I’d rather come top 5 in all the events and WIN the competition overall, than win a few workouts and miss the podium.

For me that’s the fuel to my fire, my motivation, my drive. Knowing I can get better and doing what it takes. I’m not the complete athlete yet, Im not the complete performance coach or motivational speaker I know I can be. That’s why everyday I try and improve one part of each of these.

I look at what I suck at, what I’m weak at, I’m honest with myself, self critical and I look to putting it right.

In Crossfit it can be difficult for some athletes to admit they are weak at something, they don’t like to be in the gym surrounded by their friends, fellow athletes, competitors and look foolish as they try and master a skill, lift or improve strength in things they are weak at. Ego can very easily get in the way here, and I’ll admit I do feel this way from time time to time.

But it’s only when we embrace these moments, these workouts, these opportunities to get better that we WILL actually improve.

I won’t be competing in individual competitions for about 6-8months now. I’ll only be doing team comps or maybe something individual for fun, but for major individual comps i’ll be taking a back seat so I can work on my weaknesses and come back a stronger athlete. I’ll be putting the work in so I correct the mistakes as I work towards my long term goal.

So my challenge to you is be prepared to screw up, miss your mark and have setbacks. You’ll discover these when you step out your comfort zone and when you start pushing to your goals. In these moments I challenge you to look at your weaknesses, be self critical, be honest with yourself and then do the work to put it right for next time.

Why?

Because when you do then you grow, evolve, level up and get closer to your goal. You have to be aware of your weaknesses as much as your strengths because this is also where you need your attention. Then you can correct them and move further forward.

I challenge you to do what it takes in training, in self development, in self mastery and be prepared to fail. I challenge you to get out your comfort zone and maybe even feel like you look foolish from time to time because when you embrace your ability to learn from mistakes then there isn’t ANYTHING that can stop your progress apart from your own ego.

Mistake + Correction = Learning.

What Feeling Exhausted Taught Me.

I wrote the below blog in 2014 and it STILL rings true today…

What feeling exhausted taught me today.

So this morning after a 5am alarm call (I hate getting up before 6:30am, it’s not good for me)

I rolled out of bed, got ready and made it into work.

Standing there this morning as I waited for my double espresso to pour out I had all these feels

Of being overwhelmed.

I was feeling like I had so much to do and not enough time to do that, you’ve almost certainly felt this way before right?

I was thinking there’s just so much work to be done to make DH fitness into the life changing company it can be.

Also thinking about how much I want to be the best athlete I can be
As I sat there sipping my coffee, both these feeling were followed up with doubt, fear, overwhelm, dread and stress.

Right there and then I stopped myself in the moment that point where you catch yourself

And I said to myself…

…What if all I do is being better today than I was yesterday?

Let me say that again

What if all I do is be better today that I was yesterday?

Because let’s face that’s all we have, the now, the today

The past is over right, we can’t change that

The future isn’t really ours to own or change either.

Yeah we can plan, organise, dream etc.

But we really only have today and right now.

So instead of me thinking how can I improve all these areas in my life and stressing the f**k out about then, I just though…

What can I do today to be better?

An immense weight lifting from me,

So today I’m going to do one thing to inspire one person (might even come from this blog that’s why I wrote it)

Its might be during our team training and development session today
Or it might be a member of dh fitness…either way all I need to do to know I’m on point today is inspire and motivate 1 person.

As for my journey to being the best athlete I can be

All I’m going to do is go and train and give it the best i’ve got, nothing more and nothing less…That’s all I can ask of myself.

Thanks for reading the ramble

Alpha Dave, Aiming to be the best version of myself one day at a time.

My Next Crossfit Competition

My next Crossfit Competition will be this Saturday and I’ll be competing at the ‘First Means Everything’ Finals.

My focus and mindset going into this competition is to give my absolute best and I will leave ‘everything’ I’ve got on the competition floor.

As they would say “The hay is in the barn”. I’m the most physically and mentally prepared I have EVER been for a competition and this Saturday will be my opportunity to put all the preparation to the test.

However it’s the journey that pushes me.

See the goal does not matter as much as we believe it does. Regardless of size, scale, time frame, why you want it etc…None of this matters as much as the process…aka the journey.

The journey we undertake to move us towards our goal/s, that’s where we must excel. That’s where we must find happiness, joy, fun, freedom, contentment and personal growth.

The goal will never be the be-all-end-all, it’s the journey that should make us feel alive, passionate, purposeful.

Sure the goal is important because it gives us direction, something to work towards and clarity of our progress, a kind of test at the end to see how well we’ve performed, or a pat on the back for something achieved.

I could never reach my goals if I hated the process and that’s because it doesn’t matter how motivated I am, if my hearts not truly in it then its not for me.

The purpose of the process is to change you.

Will the journey be easy?

Absolutely not, it will test you, push you and move you further out of your comfort zone than ever before because that this is the purpose of the process. The process is meant to ‘CHANGE’ you.

You can not be the same person you are right now today if you want more, better, bigger, happier, healthier, freedom in your life. The very idea of having more means you as a person MUST become MORE.

You need to level up, grow, self develop and move yourself onto a high plain in life. Then once you are committed to this, then the goal becomes closer.

And remember with any goal, once it’s been achieved and then celebrated you’ll always desire something else. This is what makes the greats…Great. They never settle, they never stop, they never stagnate, their desire never stops. When it does they leave that area of life behind and move on.

When the journey stops being your purpose in life, then you’ll discover a new path to follow.

Note, that when you set a goal for yourself and you feel that rush of excitement comes over you with all the possibilities it will bring to your life, I encourage you to start thinking about the journey YOU must take to achieve that specific outcome.

————————————-

Consider WHO do you need to become to achieve your goal/s.

What will your daily habits will look like?

What will your weekly schedule look like?

What does your mindset need to become?

Who you will need to bring into your life to support you?

What strengths do you have that will assist you?

What areas do you need to improve?

What skills and knowledge you will need to adopt?

How much this is going to take from your life, commitment level?

—————————————

There is a personal transformation you will need to go through to reach your ambitions in life and it will change you.

Be ready for change because it’s one of the only certainties in life.

Alpha Dave.

What Do You Do If You Don’t Have Time?

You say you don’t have time and struggle to find the time to work on your goals…

I say…BS.

I’m not going to beat around the bush here, I’m going straight into it.

You say you don’t have time to work on your goals…I say you’re not MAKING the time.

Let’s break down the ‘lack of time myth’:

– You have 168 hours per week…WE ALL HAVE THIS. Everyone from you, to Bill Gates and Serena Williams.

– Sleep for 50 of them (average 7hours per night)

– Work for 40 of them,

– Groom for 8 of them,

– Eat and drink for 10 of them…

So how are you spending the other 60 hours, or more specifically 8.5hours per day?

Let’s say you have other commitments, longer working hours, family, gym, commuting to work etc.

ALL that taken into account are you REALLY telling me you don’t have JUST 60 minutes spare per day to work on your dreams?

JUST 7hours per week MAX.

If you read this and say “No I still don’t have time”. Then my advise to you is your goals aren’t enough for you because if you can’t carve out a little time to work on your dreams then your dreams aren’t for you.

That’s all it takes to get started, 60minutes per day to to work on your dream body, life, business, career or whatever your ambition is.

For most people to find 60minutes extra per day just need to stop mindlessly scrolling Facebook or Instagram and they’ll find time.

Imagine if you just did 60minutes today on your goal, that’s an extra 60minutes you’ve spent on your goal today than you did yesterday. By doing this you are now at least ONE step closer to the outcome you want.

Everything in life in HOW you view it from your perspective. This is partly what MINDSET is.

Someone says; “I don’t have time”.

I say; “You’re not making time”. All because we are both looking at it from different angles.

Change the way you view things and this will transform how you spend those valuable minutes.

You’re either moving closer to your dreams or further away and this comes down to your value of time and how you use it.

What Do You Do If You’re NOT Good Enough?

Throughout your life you will come up against hurdles and challenges you weren’t prepared to face. Things that will derail you from your goals if you allow them.

There are going to be times when you just aren’t enough to meet your goals. You won’t be fit enough, strong enough, smart enough or experienced enough to attain the outcome/s you want.

Even with all the fuzzy motivational, affirmation, “You can do it” BS out there the facts are as simple as black and white.

  • Sometimes in life you just won’t be good enough to meet the mark.
  • Sometimes you’ll go after a goal in life and you will miss it.
  • Sometimes in life you’ll go after a new job and you’ll be rejected.
  • Sometimes in life you’ll go after attaining the outcome you desire and you won’t be good enough.

All the wishful thinking, positive mental attitude and reciting affirmation over and over again WON’T bridge that cap between where you ARE…And Where you WANT to be.

HOWEVER…

This is not the time to quit or tell yourself you aren’t enough.

This IS the time to MAKE yourself good enough.

I don’t care what people out there say, If you are willing to put in enough effort, hard work, sacrifice, commitment, positive moves, adjustments, work on yourself, your mindset, body, confidence and build the right support network around you…

There’s very little you WON’T achieve.

Of cause we’re not all made to be LeBron James, or Usain Bolts. Genetics does play a part in some physical and mental capacities.

BUT..

It’s easy to quit and put off your dreams by saying,

“Well he or she was born that way”. “They have better genetics than me”.

Or, “They’re lucky”.

Or, “They have it different to me, my life’s different”.

These boring, worn out excuses are easier to recite as a way of explaining peoples lack of commitment to their success…Than it is to roll up the sleeves and dig deep.

You have a choice, When you miss the mark on your goals and aren’t enough to reach them right now, you can either hide away in your shell and spout off BS excuses…

OR you can get your head down and MAKE yourself good enough.

– This is the time to train harder, push further and do more than your competitors are willing to doing.

– This is the time to get your head down, learn more, study harder, make adjustments to your social life and become more educated.

– This is the time to put the work in, pay your dues, work smarter and get experienced within your profession.

Through hard work, consistent effort, sacrifice, patience and some sheer grit…IT is the time to MAKE yourself good enough so that one day soon you CAN reach your goals.

There are NO easy quick fix or any motivational quote I can put in here to leave you feeling all fuzzy and warm inside that everything will be ok.

The ONLY way you and I will EVER achieve our ambitions is if we make ourselves do it and make ourselves GOOD ENOUGH to have them.

The Paralyzing Power of Feeling Overwhelmed.

The paralyzing power of feeling overwhelmed and the NEGATIVE affect it has on your life.

The scenario;

We start a new career path or business, or maybe a new training and dieting program and because we are excited and motivated our intention is to do as MUCH as we can.

We want to do it all now and strike whilst our motivation and energy is highest. We feel we can take on the world, We want to be at our end goal NOW…

But because of this do we actually end up biting off more than we can chew or taking on more than we can handle?

We try so hard to do it ALL, that we end up doing nothing and become paralyzed with feeling overwhelmed.

For example:

We try to do everything on our new diet, following the plan 100%, buy all the recommend supplements, the healthy foods, cooking clean meals, avoiding social events, cutting back on alcohol, sugar etc.

However after a few weeks we realise that we just can’t keep this pace so we end up stopping. Or we adjust the diet to fit and end up doing less and less until we eventually go back to eating how we did before we started.

Let’s say the goal is to get in shape so we hit the gym 5-6 x per week, every week. Doing classes, HIIT training, cardio, weights, core work etc…We try and fit it all in but we get tired, burned out, we miss sessions and then get peed off. The more this happens the higher our chances are of stopping. We started out by doing more exercise than we can physically and mentally handle and the only way forward is to do less. The problem with doing ‘less’ is we can feel like we’re failing.

Maybe we start doing a sport and we try to progress quickly because we want to get good at it sooner rather than later. We try and develop the fitness, the strength, the skills and knowledge that go with the sport, But its a long process. We end up realising that their’s soooo much to it that we haven’t got time to fit it in. So we either continue to feel overwhelmed and underprepared in the sport, feeling like we aren’t good enough…Or we quit.

Maybe we start a new career or open a new business, we start doing everything, reading and learning everything. Going onto courses, building our skills, marketing, getting new clients, networking, branding, tax returns., accounts, sales, employment, trying to get ahead, putting more hours in…The list goes on.

We dive in the deep end and try and swim. We try and keep pace but realise that we are doing everything, and none of it to the standard needed to create a successful business or a flying career. We realise we can’t keep this pace so we feel stressed, burned out, anxious. We start to procrastinate on tasks, decisions, things don’t move forward as quickly as we’d like. So we start to panic, get frustrated and stress ourselves out.

We’re not growing the business at the rate we want. We’re spending almost every waking minute consumed by the business/career. Over time we’ll spend year upon year driving everyone close to us away and all we’ll have is a business/job that you LIVE to work for, becoming a slave to it. And every waking day is just a series of stresses and overwhelm.

In most of these situations feeling OVERWHELMED is the core of it all. This sometimes can become so intense that we end up procrastinating. And this means we end up doing NOTHING…Which makes us feel MORE overwhelmed and stressed… So the cycle continues.

Overwhelm

Why does this happen?

Because as humans and we already have a full plate in our lives. We’re already doing and juggling so much, especially in the modern world where we WANT to have it all.

HOWEVER we only have so much time, energy and mental space for so many things (Work, Family, Fitness, Fun, Sport, Eating, Sleeping, Social time, Down Time, Personal development)…especially if we want to have everything that life offers.

So what SHOULD we do?

“Swing Singles”.

The key is to take small BUT consistent swings at life, or put differently just take one step at a time…aka Swing Singles.

The aim is to do JUST ONE THING, OR TAKE THAT ONE STEP that moves you closer to your goal/s. And ONLY one thing until this becomes a permanent part of your daily routine

Then once we’ve done that we can focus on the next step WHILST continuing to do step 1.

For example:

+ If you want to improve your nutrition then change ONE eating habit. For example eat a healthy breakfast 6 days per week for 4 weeks. This ingrains the HABIT. Just do ONE thing. Leave everything else until you can consistently eat a healthy breakfast. Don’t worry about lunch, dinner, snacks etc. Don’t worry about gluten and sugar content right now. Just nail down 1 meal. Get that right first and THEN move on.

+ If you want to improve your fitness and you DON’T exercise right now, then start with doing 10minutes of exercise 3 x per week. If you do exercise then just increase what you do by 10%. So if you run 5miles 3 x per week then run 5.5miles. Avoid trying to add in 1-2 more sessions per week, or trying to go 5 x per week. You’re got to do things that are manageable. Start small then build up.

+ If you want to grow your business choose 1 AREA to work on and do this consistently for 4 weeks. If it’s sales that could be make 1 phone call to a perceptive client 5 days per week for 4 weeks. Then do 2 per day and so now. Ingrain the habit of ‘DOING’ into your schedule.

It sounds so simple…And it is in theory.

What makes this strategy work is YOUR doing something that will have a positive affect on the area of life you wish to improve. Doing something that is manageable and then ‘doing it’ over and over again (swinging singles) until it brings results.

Results aren’t achieved by hitting a ‘home run’ every once in a while or trying to keep hitting them over and over even when you keep missing. This one hit wonder mentality and trying to do it ALL in one go, is what’s leaving you feeling more overwhelmed because you continue to miss the long term results.

The key is to keep hitting that ball for a single. Then move to base one, then hit it for another single and you move to base 2 etc etc. I’m using a Baseball metaphor to describe Swing Singles…But I think it fits really well.

Most people try this all or nothing approach. It’s all in at 100%. But then after 3-4 weeks or so motivation drops and every week they end up doing less, 90%, 80%, 70% etc. Until they end up doing ZERO…Sound familiar?

However when you swing singles the approach is to do 10% this week, then 20% next month, then 30% and so on. We continue to move forward and do MORE…Not do less.

Once you have that one habit ingrained into you and your DAILY routine for about a 28day time period…Then start the next habit, swing that next single. And repeat the process…This strategy works.

Swing singles everyday and that is when the magic happens.
Remember you are human, your not a robot. You can’t keep doing more and more, you’ll burn out, get overwhelmed, stressed and frustrated…Then you’ll quit.

Flip this on its head, do less now. Start small and build upon these habits over time.

The art of swinging singles is the secret to LONG TERM success.

The 3 Certainties in Life…

There are 3 certainties in life…

Death,

Taxes,

And Change.

Regardless if you’re ready for change or trying to avoid it, it is an inevitable part of our lives. Without change we as humans could not have evolved. The life we live, the world around us, even the planet we live in could and would not be what it is today without it evolving (change).

Change whether good, bad or indifferent is always just around the corner and the best way we can deal with it is to…Roll with it.
If you fear change, try to hold onto what you’ve got because of fear. Hide away from it or try to control it you’ll always be living a life feeling caught of guard, unaware, fearful and stressed.

This is how many people live their lives. We can fear the unknown, or when we are happy with something/someone we don’t want that to adjust, end, transform. As humans we search for the comfortable, the knowable, the safe.

However this can keep us living in fear. And then when change does occur we are caught of guard and this can have a serious affect on our mindset, life and future self.

Once you expect that it’s an inevitable part of our existence then you can move onto…

Embracing change, rolling with it, dealing with it, modelling it or even influencing it.
Trying to control the world around you is pointless, the only thing you can control is you…And even that sometimes feels like its not possible all the time.
HOWEVER…

As the world and our lives evolve, be free to embrace this and accept that its necessary.

Then focus on controlling you, your thoughts, your actions, your behaviours and do this through an ever changing life…And you’ll do just fine.

As the band Oasis said…“You’ve gotta Roll With It”.
